Amazing Grace and the beginning of Lowery’s Christian rap
Read about Lowery’s first original Christian rap song, Amazing Grace, his high school talent show, and the beginnings of The Contrast.
Lowery’s interest in rhyme began early, with a copy of Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends from his Uncle Kris. At the start of high school, a conversation with his youth pastor helped connect his interest in rap with his desire to tell people about God.
One year later, Kyle won his high school talent show with a performance of Amazing Grace, his first original Christian rap song. According to his biography, that performance led to church outreach events, youth group appearances, and opportunities to share his music around Central California.
By graduation, he had released his first rap CD, The Contrast, under the name K-Low. His biography says that 550 of the 650 students in his graduating class received the CD.
Amazing Grace is part of The Contrast in the Bad Rap library. Listen to the recording and explore the album to hear this chapter of Lowery’s music.
